Not enough Americans
have been stabbed in the gut
survival lust:
scouring the drawer a hundred times
and finding nothing to devour
not a cracker,
not even a ketchup packet.
Not enough Americans
have touched the stone
of their brother’s grave,
bones and medals
returned home from war;
their son,
a cousin,
a best friend…
Not enough Americans
have been that brave.
Not yet.
But chains rattle
at our door.
How will we answer?
