My mother was estranged for years when I received a text message from her husband that she had stage-four lung cancer.
Over this lifetime, she and I had our ups and downs. In some ways, she had been a good mother, but, in far too many others, she was neglectful and hateful. Regardless, it is a special kind of limbo when a child waits for such a parent to be gone for good.
Will she apologize before she goes? Will she tell me she loved me all along?
